What’s Happening In The Market Now... Stocks were down at the open this morning following a big drop yesterday. The market closed yesterday at its lowest level in over 5 years. The Labor Department said new claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week to a 16-year high. The government said new applications for jobless benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 542,000 from a downwardly revised figure of 515,000 in the previous week. Sectors starting the day out strong include internet retail, brewers, advertising, food distributors while REITs, tires & rubber, healthcare facilities, coal & consumable fuels are down. Volume leaders include General Electric Capital Corp (GE), Wells Fargo and Company (WFC), Apple Inc (AAPL), Wachovia Corporation (WB) and Pfizer Inc (PFE).
