Market Intelligence Center Market Update for Friday, November 14, 2008... Essential news, alerts, and insights that can make a difference What’s Happening In The Market Now... The market opened lower this morning after the Commerce Department reported that retail sales fell by 2.8 percent in October, the largest monthly drop on record. This coincided with a weak fourth-quarter earnings forecast from retailer JC Penney (JCP). Investor pessismism was also bolstered by an announcement from the European Union that the Euro-zone is officially in a recession, with GDP declining 0.2 percent in each of the last two quarters. Taken together, this news has soured investors' mood following yesterday afternoon's rally. The dollar traded mixed against most other major currencies, while gold prices turned higher and oil futures retreated. Sectors starting the day out strong include aluminum, real estate services, and gold; while retail, tires and rubber, and semiconductor equipment are down. Volume leaders include Apple Inc (AAPL), JP Morgan Chase and Co (JPM), Alcoa Inc (AA), Hartford Financial Services Group Inc (HIG) and Chevron Corporation (CVX) . The Latest From Bloomberg News...
