Newsletter Brief

Good morning, Resource Investors.

Gold is once again threatening the historically significant number of $1,000 per ounce, powering higher on a U.S. dollar that just keeps slipping. Massive stock market gains, including a 200-plus-point surge in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday to start this week, pared gold's attractiveness as a safe haven. Holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust exchange-traded fund also rose on Monday for the first time in six sessions, to 1,134.03 metric tons, according to latest data from the fund.

Copper and other base metals benefited from improving economic sentiment over the past week – an argument also supported by the stock market gains. One report suggested mid-last week that consumer confidence is improving. Another indicated this week that the housing market may be recovering. In addition, a weak dollar continues to support copper, along with the data that show strong April pending U.S. home sales.

May was profitable for those bullish crude oil, which soared 30% that month alone. Both prevailing fundamental and technical news for the commodity generally support higher prices. However, massive inventories, built up during the ongoing global recession, still cast a shadow over crude oil prices. A recovering economy may be able to absorb the extra supply before the reality of surplus oil comes crashing down on the market, but that's still an open question.

It's all in these headlines, where you can catch up with what happened in the resource markets this past week – and prepare for the next.
