Market Alert: Could There Be Tough Times Ahead At Applied Materials (AMAT)?

Stocks are up slightly after a flat open this morning with homes sales and stock offerings driving stocks so far today. The National Association of Realtors says its seasonally adjusted index of sales contracts signed in April rose 6.7 percent to 90.3. Economists expected the index would edge up to 85 from a reading of 84.6 in March. It was the biggest monthly jump since October 2001. Financial stocks were weaker as banks sought to tap the equity market for fresh capital. Regulators said large banks must first prove they can raise money from private investors before exiting the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Commodities prices were mostly weaker after yesterday's gains. Oil futures were lower but still hovering within sight of $68 a barrel while the dollar fell against the euro and the yen. Treasury prices rose as the yield on the benchmark 10-year note slipped to 3.620%. Applied Materials Inc.
