An old friend of mine always used to say the sun rises, the sun sets, and the market will go up; but what if it doesn't? What if we find ourselves in the midst of a prolonged period of stagnant trading? Currently we see 1% and 2% swings as rather calm days. With the world economy turning from slow growth to shrinking growth and, dare I say it, deflation rearing its ugly head, stocks can't continue to produce peaks and valleys like waves in a hurricane.

The volatility will come out of the market as investors decide to stay away until there is a clear sign the worst is over. Right now, we get what we think could be that signal only to have the market drop 9% and shatter our dreams once again. But, in the next few months we will see the markets calm down as we get through the holiday shopping season, inaugurate a new President, and see fourth-quarter and year-end figures start coming out.

Read on to see where you can make money even in a market that moves sideways.
