Gary's Note: Jim picks up where he left off in yesterday's installment. Change is a comin' and it's going to be a lot more drastic than most of us think. Jim explains below. Send all questions and comments to gary@whiskeyandgunpowder.com. Whiskey & Gunpowder
As the fiesta of "globalism" (Tom Friedman-style) draws to a close another consequence of currency problems we'll have to figure out how to make things in this country again. We will not be manufacturing things at the scale, or in the manner, we were used to in, say, 1962. We'll have to do it far more modestly, using much more meager amounts of energy than we did in the past. My guess is that we will get the electricity for doing this mostly from water. It may actually be too late from a remaining capital resources point-of-view to ramp up a new phase of the nuclear power industry (and there are plenty of arguments from the practical and economic to the ethical against it). But we have to hold a public discussion about it, if only to clear the air and get on with other things, namely the new activities of alt. energy. But I would hasten to warn readers (again!) that we'll probably have to do these things more modestly too (don't count on giant wind "farms"), and that we are liable to be disappointed by what they can actually provide for us (don't expect to run Wal-Mart on wind, solar, algae-fuels, etc). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~Special~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You Can Still Recover Even in This Market We're offering our loyal readers an exclusive opportunity to get in on the second installment of our Emergency Retirement Recovery webinar, featuring our own Chris Mayer. I take great comfort in Jim's predictions though I do hope we keep the lights on and the running water hot even as the real towns and communities reform and our financial economy gives way to one that makes the stuff we actually need. And I thought the reactions to Jim Kunstler's material ran the emotional gamut The responses to Don Stott's first time at the Whiskey Bar were just as extreme. Most of you so far have practically stood up and cheered. There was even one call for a Stott-Paul 2012 ticket! Others, however "Heard it all before, and said better. Have better things to do with my time than to listen to pointless rants & raves." "Please stick to USEFUL info on the market, finances, etc. That's why we subscribe." At least that Shooter is still subscribed. I received one very terse unsubscribe request. You could almost hear the "Ha-RUMPH!" behind it. And another Shooter promised that if we keep it up, he'd be leaving us soon. But I don't think the rants and raves are pointless at all. They are just one expression of our sincerity. Here in the Whiskey Room, we're nothing if not sincere. Sincerity is our bread, water and air. With our view of the world and markets, you need a good dose of the stuff. "Aren't you embarrassed? I had to go wash my scrolling finger off with soap... Talk about undermining one's editorial credibility. "Yikes." And if you think that's bad "Does anybody from Agora read things before they get posted on WhiskeyandGunpowder.com? Do you think encouraging racism and hatred is good for your bottom line? Don Stott should have not used racism and hatred." Audacter calumniare I appreciate the praise for our choice of editorials as well as the stern finger-wagging for the same.
