When I was a kid, Sunday night before we went off to bed always meant watching a show on NBC – a division of General Electric (GE) – called Bonanza. This was an old-fashioned western about a dad and his three sons. The dad actually went on to star in a really big show called Battlestar Galactica and to sell Alpo dog food.

Bonanza started with views of those wild west wide open spaces, stampeding horses, and a flaming branding iron with a Chevrolet – owned by General Motors (GM) - logo. Between watching the adventures of the Cartwright family and their faithful Chinese man-servant, Hop Sing, we would always get treated to commercials with the latest Chevy sports cars, sedans, and rugged pickups -- the kind of vehicles the Cartwrights might drive if their ranch was in a modern-day Los Angeles suburb.

The General Motors Board of Directors
Due to low ratings and a change from Sunday to Tuesday night, the last episode of Bonanza played on January 16, 1973. It didn’t help that General Motors pulled out the year before as the show’s sponsor.

So…  If General Motors can leave Bonanza and the Cartwright family high and dry in the middle of a desert filled with rattlesnakes and sharp-toothed television executives, then why should the United States taxpayers help this auto company out of their latest death spiral?
