Shutdown PM, Job Hunting and Complex Projects

Shutting down production is something most of us never give a thought to. But when a major manufacturer has to shut down in anemergency or for routine maintenance the costs can be in millions of dollars. A well planned and executed shutdown project can save millions. It’s a complex project, which takes us to part four of our ongoing Project Complexity series. We also have a piece about job hunting - just in case you’re in the market. Read on:

  • Shutdown Project Management. Chris Vandersluis has been involved in many different types of projects in many industries. In his piece in this issue, he talks about the need for speed and efficiency when a plant is shut down. On the surface it doesn’t seem to make sense – but read on.
  • Introducing the New Project Complexity Model. Part IV. In the fourth part of this five part series, Kitty Hass examines the critical role and importance of leadership in managing complex projects and presents practical guidelines for project leaders.
  • Ethical Purchasing; Does It Even Exist? Just what is ethical purchasing? Regular blogger, Andrew Miller asks the question and considers the implications that the question raises, including should project managers be concerned about the ethics of companies supplying the projects products and services.
  • Answering Some Standardized Questions. Standardization has proved a boon in the area of technology by allowing us to plug many different appliances and tools into the common wall socket. Mike Lecky believes that standardization of techniques in project management would be result in greater PM success.
  • The Job Seekers’ Top-10 List. An uncertain economic and business climate often causes job anxiety, and sometimes prompts us to dust off the resume. Max Messmer offers some practical hints if you’re one of those who’s feeling uncertain.

Applying Complexity Thinking to Manage Project Complexity Dimensions

“For every complex problem there is a simple solution. And it is wrong:”
H. L. Mencken, journalist and satirist

Traditional project management, system engineering, and business analysis practices are often insufficient when applied to complex projects that behave dynamically. In the case of complex projects, leadership is the critical component that can make the difference. This fourth article in the series on managing project complexity presents practical techniques for project leaders faced with challenging complex initiatives. We estimate that putting these techniques into practice can reduce project rework by 30 to 50 percent, thus eliminating excessive time and cost overruns. For detailed information about the complexity management techniques presented here, refer to the book: Managing Complex Projects: A New Model.
