Essential news, alerts, and insights that can make a difference

What’s Happening In The Market Now... The market was opened lower this morning, with the Dow dropping over 100 points at the starting bell, as a surveyreleased by the National Association for Business Economics showed that 96 percent of economists believe that we are already in a recession, and that almost 75 percent believe that a recession will continue past the first quarter of 2009. In corporate news, investors are waiting to see whether the embattled US auto industry will be bailed out by a lame-duck session of Congress, which opens today. Corporate earnings were bleak this morning, with retailer Lowe's cutting its fourth-quarter profit estimate and Target narrowly beating its third-quarter profit forecast. The dollar traded mostly lower against most other major currencies, while gold prices turned lower and oil futures rose. Sectors starting the day out strong include healthcare facilities, real estate services, oil and gas exploration and producer while electronic equipment, aluminum, movies and entertainmentare down. Volume leaders include Citigroup Inc (C), Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS), General Motors Corp (GM), General Electric Co (GE) and Intel Corporation (INTC).
