What’s Happening In The Market Now... Continued anxiety over the financial sector helped push the market lower at the open this morning. Analysts have been downgrading brokerages and banks over the last few weeks and investors appear to be giving added weight to the possibility of wide spread failures. Crude oil is back on the rise as tensions between Russia and the West, concern that Tropical Storm Fay might re-enter the Gulf of Mexico and a weaker dollar combined to lift oil futures. The Labor Department reported applications for jobless benefits dropped to 432,000, down by a bigger than expected 13,000 from the previous week. Sectors starting the day out strong include coal & consumable fuels, diversified metals & mining, gold and oil & gas while computer & electronics retail, thrifts & mortgage finance, automobiles, motorcycles and homebuilding are down. Volume leaders include Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc (LEH), American International Group Inc Corp (AIG), Solarfun Power Holdings Co Ltd (SOLF), SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) and GameStop Corp Holding Company (GME).
