What’s Happening In The Market Now... Stocks were briefly up at the open before turning mixed so far this morning. The Commerce Department report said new home sales rose 2.4 percent in July, a much better performance than the 1 percent drop economists forecast. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index tumbled a record 15.4 percent during the quarter from the same period a year ago with monthly indices also clocking record declines. The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index is rose for August to 56.9, the second straight month the index posted a gain. Sectors starting the day out strong include mortgage finance, oil exploration & production and platinum & precious metals while forestry, restaurants and automobiles are down. Volume leaders include Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FRE), American International Group Inc Corp (AIG), General Electric Capital Corp (GE), Darden Restaurants Inc (DRI) and JP Morgan Chase and Co (JPM).
