What’s Happening In The Market Now... Stocks were up at the open today on better than expected economic data. The Commerce Department reported gross domestic product increased at a 3.3 percent annual rate in the April to June quarter. The revised reading was much better than the government's initial estimate of 1.9 percent and exceeded economists' expectations for a 2.7 percent growth rate. Oil prices are higher on continuing fears Tropical Storm Gustav could strengthen on its way toward crude and natural gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and refineries in the Gulf area. Sectors starting the day out strong include mortgage finance, gambling, platinum & precious metals and airlines while forestry, distillers and oil exploration & production are down. Volume leaders include Microsoft Corp (MSFT), Dell Inc (DELL), Wells Fargo and Company (WFC), Research in Motion (RIMM) and Energy Conversion Devices Inc (ENER).
